چکیده

SUMMARY An accurate definition of geometry of complex subsurface bodies, such as salt intrusions, is crucial for imaging below such targets. Full-waveform inversion (FWI) is a method for building high-resolution seismic velocity models from nonlinear iterative minimization of the misfit between observed and synthetic seismic data. The ability of FWI to accurately recover the geometry of salt bodies can be limited by several factors, with the lack of low frequencies in the data being one of them, thus, requiring the salt geometry to be often manually interpreted. In this paper we modify the FWI algorithm to use a level set representation to parameterize and invert for the geometry of salt bodies, without adding to computational cost of FWI.

Shape Optimization in Full Waveform Inversion with Sparse Blocky Model Representations

Abstract. We present a variational framework for shape optimization and shape reconstruction problems in seismic domains based full waveform inversion. We discuss general shape functionals in this framework, along with applications to shape optimization using the Helmholtz equation and image domain segmentation. We study the shape derivative in each case to express the variation of energy with ...

Discretized Adjoint State Time and Frequency Domain Full Waveform Inversion: A Comparative Study

This study derives the discretized adjoint states full waveform inversion (FWI) in both time and frequency domains based on the Lagrange multiplier method. To achieve this, we applied adjoint state inversion on the discretized wave equation in both time domain and frequency domain. Besides, in this article, we introduce reliability tests to show that the inversion is performing as it should be ...

Toward target-oriented FWI: An exact local wave solver applied to salt boundary inversion

Seismic full waveform inversion (FWI) uses the gradient of the objective function for computing model updates. This requires computation of the forward and adjoint wavefields on the current model estimate. Calculating the gradient on the full computational domain is wasteful when it is only required in a limited region of interest, as is the case in 4D seismic and salt boundary estimation, for ...

Full waveform inversion of reflection seismic data for ocean temperature profiles

[i] We show that ocean temperature profiles can be accurately recovered using only acoustic methods employed at the sea surface. Using a towed air gun array and a hydrophone streamer, thermohaline boundaries are ensonified at a suite of frequencies and angles, yielding travel time trajectories and reflectivities. These data are inverted via full waveform inversion to estimate sound speed and, s...
